Sat August 15 update:
Welcome to Waco Baylor Trombones! August 15 update:
Jaewoo Lee's junior recital (Facebook Live) will be this Sunday at 3PM. His program is difficult and he sounds fantastic! Reminder - if you are opting for all online Zoom lessons, text me ASAP. Everyone else appears to be going hybrid. Hybrid lessons will involve a half hour Zoom the first week and no F2F. All Hybrid lessons after the first week will then migrate to a 25 minute F2F and a 30 minute Zoom - the same week. Grid will be posted here by the end of next week. F2F - we are all required to have the following:
Zoom - this will be our life for a while. My recommendation is for each of us to invest in the following to improve your experience and so I can hear how you are progressing:
Studio Class - we will have our first Zoom Studio on Tuesday August 24th at 3:30 PM We will not be able to meet anywhere inside McCrary for longer than 25 minutes F2F... I am working on reserving an outside tent location during our normal studio time. Face masks and bell covers still required as of now.. I will GroupMe each time I post an update - text me now if you want all on-line lessons and no F2F - thanks guys. Strength and Honor Baylor University is committed to providing a safe educational environment for all students, faculty, and staff. In order to create the healthiest environment possible, students and instructors must properly wear face coverings over their mouths and noses while in Baylor buildings and while in the classroom. In addition, social distancing should be maintained within all classroom environments. Any student who does not bring a face covering or refuses to wear one will be dismissed from class and be considered absent. If a student who is not wearing a face covering refuses to leave class, the instructor may dismiss in-person class for that day. Such a student will be subject to disciplinary action through the Student Code of Conduct. |
School of Music Protocol - Please Read
August 12 update
Dear Trombone Studio - the Protocol for SOM activities, studio classes and applied lessons has been developed by the School of Music leadership. Please read all of this and give me a week to understand what this means for my classes.
Upon a cursory ready - this is my take away:
I will schedule a studio Zoom meeting during our first Studio Class time on Tuesday August 25 at 3:30 PM. Let me know if that time is impossible for you but please do your best to be available. Thanks all.
The extensive protocol is designed to mitigate COVID to the best of the SOM's ability. This presents a significant scheduling challenge. My desire is that you will continue to work hard, learn and have a positive experience at Baylor. I will do my best to answer any questions and offer you the best trombone studio and experience possible. We will make the best of this.

Hello Baylor Trombone Studio!
I want to welcome each of you back and let you know how eager I am to see you. There have been many developments with the School of Music and there will be more information coming in the next few days and weeks. Please read through this page and complete the survey at the bottom.
Roster:
Jeff Harrigan - GA
Zach Bell
Jaewoo Lee
Conor Wooley
Dawson Ward
Collin Napper
Nathan Stanfield
Max Davis
Chelsey Diks
Conor Wilson
Grant Hayes
Mark Bennett
Jameson Talton
Unfortunately, Christian Paarup will not be teaching at Baylor this year. This decision was made across all units at the Provost level..
I will miss him but we will plan on having him work with us as a guest from time to time and as our budget allows.
Lessons:
As I understand things, you will be able to opt in for all online lessons and studio or Face to Face lessons (for now). My desire is to see each of you every week in lessons in my studio and in studio class Tuesday and Thursday 3:30PM to 5PM.
Studio Class:
(T-Th 3:30 - 5 PM)
We may be forced to alter our studio class rehearsal space due to room restrictions, scheduling or other unforeseen circumstances. As you may be aware, the School of Music has constructed several outdoor/open air tents around the McCrary Music Building. I have not received any word as to who and when we can use the open air tents. We will need to remain nimble and flexible from week to week.
I am hopeful that we will be able to meet in 114 and 118 as usual but that may not be possible. If studio is to meet outside, begin thinking about having a quality portable stand. I will provide wind clips to be passed out and picked up at every studio class.
Choir rep TBA pending our class size.

- Consider purchasing a good quality mic so I can hear you play and you can get the most from our online experience. You will also be required to submit recordings/video each week.
- Recording projects on Zoom with only your standard phone is not preferable.
- Headphones - consider buying over the ear headphones. Those of you that I taught in the spring without headphones or only earbuds may have experienced feedback or cutout - and I hate hearing my voice through your input (echo).
- Syllabus - on the way and will be posted on this page

- If you have elected to only have Zoom lessons online (and that is totally ok) you will obviously not be able to participate in choir. If enough of you elect to go all online I will work on having a Zoom studio master class each week and smaller F2F studio classes with others.
- Obviously the ITA rep has been a large part of our curriculum. We may not be able to participate in this process initially. It is possible that we can dive in closer to our December 10 due date.

Once you have completed the survey below - I will construct a weekly teaching grid. I will push this out on GroupMe for you to pick your lesson slots and post here.
The lesson grid will go up immediately following Placement Audition results. If the ensembles are NOT meeting due to COVID, I will adjust the grid to allow for more Applied Teaching lesson time options.
Note - the Grid will be available on a first come first serve basis. I will work with each of you to find a suitable lesson time but there are certain times throughout the week that I am unable to teach due to other committees, Faculty in Residence or research/recording commitments.
If we go ALL ZOOM for any reason - I will teach everyone in hour long blocks on Monday through Wednesday.

Group Me - this is how I will communicate to the studio
I will work to meet your COVID needs and make sure we adhere to the SOM COVID protocol. This will be a challenging year but I think we will get through just fine. I will be teaching Zoom lessons Monday through Wednesday and Face to Face Wednesday through Friday. If F2F lessons are cancelled for any reason, we will migrate to Zoom. I will make one large Canvas applied lesson course and have a few graded projects and assignments for everyone. I will grade individual lessons on Canvas. Your weekly lesson schedule may change slightly if forced to go all online.
