Brent Phillips—performances
Dispensation Project: This video project, begun in 2024, will include seven produced substantive works for trombone and piano. Each work reflects periods of musical and artistic growth throughout my personal development. They serve as an introduction to topics of myth, practice, pedagogy, culture, philosophy of music, artistic nuance, development, teaching, current musical culture, attention span, inspiration, resilience, performance practice, and ultimately attempt to address the questions of why we study music. Each work will be a title in a chapter book I am authoring to be published in the spring of 2026. I am thrilled to include many anecdotal stories from former teachers, former students, personal experiences, and life lessons along the way.
The Sulek "Sonata," Martin "Ballade," Creston "Fantasy," and Hindemith "Sonata" were recorded in complete takes during the spring and summer of 2024. Each camera angle or scene is effectively one take. I did not overdub or mime these videos, as is the more common practice in video production. It is possible to edit much smaller clips and splice individual notes or parts of measures when editing audio only. I discovered that video recording and production in this manner to be much less efficient but more challenging. My approach in video production is rooted in capturing an honest recording of audio and video simultaneously with as few cutaways as possible.
I am grateful for the opportunity to perform, teach and work alongside many of my students on major works. The artist practice room is a peculiar and sacred space. We work through many areas of our musicality, spirituality, and mental toughness, and seek to perform from a place of honest transparency and authenticity in the practice room. There is a school of playing and a necessary body of fundamentals, routine, and life cycle that is embedded in our craft. So many things are symbiotic to our musical development.
Dispensation: A certain order, system, or arrangement; administration or management. Dispensation refers to the ordering of the affairs of the world, an appointment, arrangement, or favor granted. These works synthesize the character of the trombone, the music, and the artists, and culminate in a cogent and creative vehicle to explore our purpose in musical pursuit.

This is a live recording from 2016. I was third trombone, Joseph Alessi performed as guest principal.
Live recording. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) toured Europe with Music Director Jaap van Zweden from March 8–22, 2013. The tour was the DSO's first with van Zweden and included performances in seven cities across three countries, including Vienna, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. This concert was in Meyerson Symphony Center immediately prior to the tour.
I was third trombone on the recording and tour prior to playing two full seasons as second trombone with the DSO after the retirement of John Kitzman (former principal trombone).
